This was the first project to introduce the process of composting organic waste in Kutaisi. The project had an important impact on the agricultural sector, producing 10 tons of compost from 30 tons organic waste collected over 8 months. Refuse bins were placed in 40 sites, two bins for each site, and emptied two times daily. A special vehicle was rented to ensure transportation and emptying of the bins. In addition to food waste collection, paper and cardboard were collected and delivered to the compost sites.
Compost was distributed among the population and enterprises interested in taking part in waste collection, including municipal improvement service providers who fertilized the soil in city squares and parks. The project resulted in an increased level of the population’s awareness in the field of selective waste collection and composting, and the construction of over 20 compost sites in the region.
